Silvertown Quays, a major part of the Thames Gateway initiative for London received a resolution to grant outline planning permission from the London Borough of Newham in March 2005. It was then launched by the Ken Livingstone, Mayor for London to an international audience at MIPIM, the world's leading property show.
It is expected that the project will get the green light by the end of 2005 and be on site by early 2006. The first phases of development will be the renovation of the semi-derelict Millennium Mills into outstanding residential apartments and construction of Biota! the world-class aquarium with supporting retail and leisure.

The redevelopment of the Silvertown Quays 24 hectares (60 acre) site, adjacent to the Royal Victoria Dock, London E16, is a vital element of the overall Thames Gateway plan, linking London City Airport, the river and existing residential and leisure schemes.

Biota! the 13,500 sqm aquarium is strikingly designed and will present the global diversity of aquatic life through four strongly contrasting biomes recreating complete ecosystems with plants, fish, free flying birds, mammals and other animals.

Joint developers Silvertown Quays Limited (SQL) headed by Chairman David Taylor who is also Co Chair of the Thames Gateway Forum Advisory Board, Kajima Urban Development International (KUD) and landowners, the London Development Agency (LDA), are planning a major mixed use waterfront scheme of 494,020 sq m (5.3 m sq ft), including 5,000 residential units (including social rented and affordable housing) and leisure facilities that include the world-class aquarium designed by renowned architect Terry Farrell & Partners. The site was masterplanned by Urban Strategies International (USI) a specialist practice from Toronto, Canada.

Silvertown Quays are exhibiting at the Thames Gateway Forum, held at ExCeL on 23rd- 24th November 2005 on the Royal Docks Partnership stand (A29).
